Fund raising for Cystic Fibrosis

On Sunday the 16th July we will be holding an auction of lots and experiences to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Every year around 2,500 babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis, the condition causes reduced lung function, usually requiring daily nebulised treatments and physiotherapy. Many have to endure frequent periods of hospitalisalisation which, among the young, can have a very detrimental affect of their quality of life.

If the weather is fine we will be offering morning coffee and home made cakes ( Emma is going to make a load of Pimms cupcakes), if you are joining us for lunch you can make a silent bid for any of the lost that take your fancy, and of course you can come over at 3.pm to join us for the live auction.

You can bid for a Jeroboam of organic French wine, a magnum of Champagne, vouchers for a tour of Hillside Brewery, a cookery class at Harts Barn cookery school, original water colours by renowned Dutch artist Wiebe van Der Zee, a day's fishing at Phocle lake and many other super lots.

If you can't make it on the day you can email your bid by 11.00 on the 16th using the contact us page of our website.  Over the next few days we will be posting photographs of most of the lots on Facebook, or if you need to take a closer look, just pop in and see us.

Today it is our birthday!

It is six years since we saved the Moody Cow from closure, we have learned that it is much harder to turn around a business that has failed, in this case, multiple times than opening a new business.

From a modest start, with me, Dawn and Tom, Ollie helping with the washing up and a couple of Saturday girls we now employ a team of five full time Chef's and assistants in the kitchen and three supporting them front of house.

We are proud to have been awarded a certificate of excellence from the TripAdvisor community every year since we opened and received a coveted Michelin red guide listing for the last three years running.

We are so lucky to have a brilliant team who are totally dedicated to cooking and serving the best quality food sourced from some of the most passionate local farmers and growers.

We are so fortunate to have some of the most supportive guests, some travel such long distances to come and see us, they forgive us when we make the odd mistake and they return again and again.

Today we will raise a glass to all of them and all of you.

Michelin guide listing for third successive year

We are all thrilled at the Moody Cow, today we learned that we have been awarded a coveted listing in the Michelin Red Guide for the third year in succession.


The Michelin inspectors will have visited us unannounced at least four times over the last twelve months, they pay for their own meals, you cannot request a visit or buy a listing which is quite unique among guides.


We are especially pleased because this demonstrates that our cooking is consistently good and in the opinion of the inspectors in the top five hundred restaurants in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.


This could only be possible with the hard work that our dedicated young team put in and the fantastic support that we receive from our guests who come back again and again.


We may just indulge in a glass or two of something fizzy after service today to celebrate.

This month Moody Cow club card membership topped 300!  Membership entitles the holder to a selection of "treats" that are refreshed every month.

When you but a starter and a main course from our lunchtime or evening menu we will give you a free homemade dessert to round off your meal, if you prefer a glass of our house wine to a pud, that is just fine.

Certificate of excellence award

We are all celebrating at the Moody Cow, we have just been awarded our fifth certificate of excellence in a row from TripAdvisor.


To achieve the award we had to maintain an overall rating of at least four out of five stars and a high number of reviews over the last twelve months, our rating of 4.5 places the Moody Cow in the top 10% of restaurants in the United Kingdom.


The fact that we have achieved this every year since we saved the Moody Cow from closure in June 2011 is an achievement that all of the team at the Moody Cow are very proud of.


We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our guests for their support, especially those that take the time to share their experience on TripAdvisor.

On June the first it will be five years since we saved the Moody Cow from being closed down and boarded up. We took a rare moment to reflect, in 2011 we set out with a simple vision, to create the kind of country pub we would like to go to ourselves, with authentic home made food, using the best, most local ingredients we could find, relaxed, informal but attentive service and a well kept cellar.


We would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated young team, our passionate suppliers, growers, merchants and farmers and of course our guests, without you we simply do not have a business and you are the ones who will judge how close we are to achieving our simple vision.

It Could Just Save a Life

In a rural location like Upton Bishop it is likely that an ambulance will take more than ten minutes to arrive, so the availability of a community defibrillator within minutes really could save a life. 

We have funded the purchase of a community defibrillator for the people of Upton Bishop, and local residents have received training which was kindly supported by West Midlands Ambulance Service. We have decided to dedicate the unit to Alison Griffiths; as Alison did so much for the community it just seemed fitting. 

 We were amazed and quite touched when Alison's family offered to contribute £500 towards the cost of the unit, and in addition to this another Upton Bishop resident has agreed to fund the ongoing cost of consumables. It is fantastic how this initiative has brought our community together.

2016 Michelin Guide

We are thrilled that we have been awarded a coveted listing in the Michelin Guide 2016. This is the second year running that the inspectors have placed us in the top 590 dining pubs in Britain and Ireland. 

 This listing is a credit to our entire team, and we’d like to thank Tom who leads a young, dedicated, and passionate team in the kitchen, Dawn, Sarah and all of our super front of house team, many of whom were brand new to hospitality before joining us at the Moody Cow, and of course Dave who looks after front of house standards - that is when he is not breaking stuff!
